Preparing for the Vasectomy

In the week before the vasectomy:

  • No aspirin, ASA products, ibuprofen (or other NSAIDs) for 7 days pre-op. If you are taking them on doctor’s orders, call our office to discuss it.
  • No alcohol for at least 48 hours pre-op and don’t plan for any for 48 hours post-op either.
  • Call one day before surgery to confirm your appointment. Ensure that the office is made aware of any new medical conditions, genital conditions, surgeries, bleeding problems, medications or allergies (or additional children) since the time of your original consultation.

On the day of vasectomy:

  • Shower one to two hours before your appointment. Wash the genitals thoroughly and don’t forget to put on clean underwear.
  • Eat a meal before the vasectomy. Fasting is neither required nor recommended.
  • No shaving of the genitals is required at this clinic. It’s too itchy as it grows back.
  • Wear loose pants or joggers to accommodate the padded supporter you’ll be wearing out of the office.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early. If you’re late your appointment may be cancelled, and you’ll be charged for the visit.
  • Don’t be nervous. You can pretend that you are for the sake of the sympathy you’re planning to get afterward, but between you and me, it’s not that bad.
  • After the vasectomy you may drive home unless you have ever fainted or nearly fainted, in which case you MUST bring someone to drive you home. It’s just a precaution in case you get faint.
  • You should go straight home after the vasectomy, put your feet up and ice the scrotum for at least two or three hours.

IMPORTANT! There is a $40.00 fee which is payable at the time of vasectomy, by cash, debit or credit card in Langley. We can only accept cash at the Vancouver office. This fee is to cover our cost for the special after care items, including an athletic support, gauze, and a week's worth of ibuprofen. The fee is waived if it constitutes a financial hardship. It’s still cheaper than a week’s worth of Pampers.

If you miss your appointment without 72 hours notice, or arrive late, your appointment may be cancelled, and you will be charged a cancellation fee.

We will require that you sign a consent form before surgery stating that you have been informed of the risks and that you understand all the implications. You can view the consent form in the online registration section of the website. You do not need your partner's consent.

If in doubt about anything call and ask.
